DAGGETT WINS TOPLESS AT I-96 SPEEDWAY

Lake Odessa, MI – Dustin Daggett (Portland, MI), never missing an opportunity to run at his home track, took his non wing sprint car to I-96 Speedway on June 18th to run with Great Lakes Traditional Sprints presented by Perfit and went home with his first topless win of the season.

Stevie Irwin (Fenton, MI) started out the night on top of board setting fast time during group qualifying with a 16.75 second lap. Lee Underwood (Troy, OH) was second quick with a 16.837 lap, while Daggett, Max Frank (Williamston, MI) and Drew Rader (Findlay, OH) rounded out the top 5 cars.

In the Engler Machine & Tool Heat 1, Irwin made short work of taking the lead by the second lap and held off the field to take the checkered flag and the heat race win. Rader and Daggett finished 2nd and 3rd respectively and qualified for the redraw for the front 3 rows of the feature. Brian Ruhlman (Clark Lake, MI) and Doug Stepke (Brooklyn, MI) rounded out the top 5.

Jay Steinebach (Hudsonville, MI) started the pole and stayed on the peddle, taking the checkered and the win in the Rocket Headers Heat 2. Keith Sheffer, Jr, who had a bad qualifying round, was behind the 8 ball starting 6th, but needing to get at least to 3rd for a redraw spot. Methodically picking his way through traffic, Sheffer was chasing down Steinebach at the checkered flag for 2nd. Underwood secured the final redraw spot with a 3rd place finish while Mike Galajda (Fenton, MI) and Frank rounded out the top five.

Irwin and Sheffer led the field around the track to take the green in the Perfit A-Main. The first 8 laps were all Irwin and Sheffer. Then Daggett gets around Sheffer in the 9th lap and he began to work on closing the gap with Irwin. Gaining a little each lap in turns 3 and 4, Daggett got his chance with 5 laps to go. On Irwin’s bumper down the front stretch and weaving in and out of lap traffic, Daggett set up to go high in turn one as Irwin went low around the bottom. Encountering a lap car in the middle of turns 1 and 2, Irwin got pinned on the bottom as Daggett cruised around the top for the lead. Irwin had one good run at Daggett with two laps to go, but it was Daggett at the Checkered flag for the win, with Stevie Irwin, Sheffer, Ruhlman and Rader rounding out the top 5.
